James Henry Deutchman (SN 14 / Lt.) born at Ararat, was a 23 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 19th 1915. He embarked for overseas service on July 8th and served predominantly with the Camel Corps in Egypt and the Middle East. On July 19th 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder but recovered and was able to rejoin his unit. The remainder of his service was without major incident but the fact that he rose to the rank of lieutenant is an indication of his performance as a soldier. He returned to Australia aboard the Dongola, disembarked at Melbourne on August 25th 1919 and was discharged on November 15th. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2.
