Biography

John Maher (SN 668) born in Bungaree, was a 22 year old butcher when he enlisted at Colac on March 11th 1915. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 8th and saw action at Gallipoli for the latter months of that campaign. In April 1916 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion for service in France which he reached in June. In September he was wounded in action suffering a severe gunshot wound to his left shoulder. He was evacuated to hospital in England where he had extended treatment. He returned to Australia aboard the Runic, disembarked at Melbourne on November 26th 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, wounded’ on July 11th 1920.
