John Pascoe was born in Ballarat and was a Contractor. Although his records do not show an exact enlistment date they do show he was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 23rd Battalion, B Company on 26 August 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides. He was promoted to Captain with the 23rd on 23 July 1916. On 7 may 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross for distinguished service in the field. Before his return to Australia, having reached the end of his service, he was appointed the final rank of Major.
