Biography

Wilfred John Wilson (SN 58) was born in Ballarat and was a 35 year old labourer, married to Lydia, when he enlisted on March 19th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne in May to serve at Gallipoli with the 24th Infantry Battalion. While serving at Gallipoli he became ill with severe bronchitis and was evacuated to 2nd Australian General Hospital in Cairo where he was diagnosed as suffering from valvular disease of the heart. He was returned to Australia where he was discharged as medically unfit. He applied for a pension and was accepted, and the repatriation system accepted responsibility for his treatment. He died on April 22nd 1917 and is buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery.
