Biography

William Harold Clarke (SN 849) was born in Talbot, and was a single 23 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 19th 1915. He was stationed with the 24th Battalion, 1st Reinforcements, with whom he served at Gallipoli from August 30th 1915 until the evacuation in December. In April 1916 he was admitted to hospital in Egypt suffering from enteric fever and shell shock. Assessed as unfit for further active service, he was returned to Australia and reached Melbourne in June 1915 before being discharged as medically unfit on August 31st 1916.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his surname as Clark.
