Biography

Thomas Valentine Copperwaite (SN 348) was born in Ballarat and attended the Urquhart Street and Redan State Schools. He was an 18 year old fitter when he enlisted in Ballarat on May 4th 1915, and he left Australia less than a week later on board the Ulysses. He was posted to the 21st Infantry Battalion and saw action at Gallipoli before moving on to the Western Front. He was killed in action during the fighting at Mouquet Farm, near Pozieres, on August 26th 1916, and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery in France. He was just 19 years of age.
