William Emmerson (SN 378) born at Harrow near Coleraine, was a 30 year old engine driver when he enlisted at Birchip on March 29th 1915. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 5th and in August he joined his unit at Gallipoli. Back in Egypt after the Gallipoli campaign he developed health problems that caused him to be returned to Australia aboard the Itonus. He reached Melbourne on July 12th 1916 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, muscular rheumatism’ on August 27th.
