Julius Samuel Lazarus (Major) was the Bungaree Shire Secretary and Engineer when, at the age of 53, he was appointed as a major in the AIF on April 23rd 1915. On June 17th he embarked aboard the Wandilla, attached to the 14th Infantry Battalion, and sailed to Egypt. In November he landed at Gallipoli but after three weeks he was returned to Egypt at his own request. He was then returned to Australia aboard the Runic and disembarked at Melbourne on May 14th 1916. Deemed to be medically unfit, his appointment was terminated two weeks later on May 28th.
