Arthur Eric Ryan (SN 1567) was born at Hay NSW but was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 9th 1915. On June 28th he embarked aboard the Berrima attached to the 21st Infantry Battalion, and reached Gallipoli in September. After Gallipoli he served in France from late March 1916 although his early months there were highlighted by a charge of being drunk in his billet and two periods of detention for being absent without leave. In August he was wounded in action suffering a gunshot wound to his left thigh and evacuated to England. He returned to France in March 1917 where his service was interrupted by periods in hospital due to diphtheria and influenza until he was wounded in action again, a shrapnel wound to his hand. When hostilities ceased, he departed England on Christmas Day 1918 aboard the Takada and returned to Australia where he was discharged on April 5th 1919.
