Michael James Miles was born in Serviceton, VIC and was a Labourer living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, C Company on 9 April 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915 and sailed for Gallipoli where he landed on August 30th. He served there until December 10th when he was evacuated suffering from malaria. He was able to join his unit in France for a short period but illness again forced him from the battlefield for most of 1917. He returned to France in early 1918 and saw out the war before returning to Australia in May 1919.
