Biography

James Leslie White (SN 1636) was born in Lillimur, near Kaniva, but attended the Wendouree State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on the 8th of April 1915. He was 24 years of age, single and employed as a hotel yardman. He was posted to the 22nd Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne aboard the Berrima in late June. He took ill during the very cold winter at Gallipoli and was evacuated to hospital on Mudros but died there of diphtheria on 12th November 1915. He is buried in the East Mudros Military Cemetery on the island of Lemnos, Greece.
