Biography

William John Cockerall (SN 1719) was born in Ballarat and was a 21 year old coach painter when he enlisted on the 4th January 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Wiltshire in April, reaching Gallipoli at the end of May. Little more than two months later, while serving with the 8th Battalion, he was killed in action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on August 6th 1915. He was 21 years of age and is buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery at Gallipoli.
