Francis "Frank" James Blanchfield (SN 1008) was a 19 year old motor driver from Skipton Street in Ballarat when he enlisted on April 7th 1915. He trained first with the 19th Light Horse before transferring to the 24th Battalion with whom he remained. He embarked on the Euripides on May 10th, just a month after his enlistment. On October 6th 1917 he was wounded in action, sustaining a gunshot wound to the scalp. His wound required that he be evacuated to England for treatment and rehabilitation, although he was unable to recover sufficiently to return to active service. In early 1918, after the guns had fallen silent, he was charged with being absent without leave, after which he spent time in hospital suffering from illness. He returned to Australia on the Saxon, reaching Melbourne on January 30th 1919.
