James Samuel Reed enlisted in Ballarat West, Victoria at the age of 22 on the 9th of April 1915. He had been born in Melbourne, was single, and was employed as a Labourer. He volunteered and was stationed with the 24th Battalion, Headquarters with the Regimental Number 1342. He was diagnosed with Rheumatism and Gas Poisoning before being discharged and returning to Australia on the 25th of February 1918.
