Biography

James Samuel Reed (SN 1342) born in Melbourne, was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on April 9th 1915. He undertook infantry training at Ballarat and Broadmeadows before embarking aboard the Euripides on May 10th. He sailed first to Egypt, then in August 1916 he moved to France attached to the 6th Machine Gun Company. While his service record notes some minor illnesses and injuries, the most significant entry notes his absence without leave for 12 days shortly after the signing of the Armistice. He returned home on the Balmoral Castle, disembarked on April 14th 1919 and was discharged on June 13th.
