William Herbert Boustead was born in Ballarat and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the 6th Field Ambulance, Section A on 2 February 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A31 Ajana on 4 June 1915. He disembarked in France in March 1916. In April of 1917 he transferred to the 2nd Australian General Hospital and served through the war with nothing more than a couple of bouts of minor illness. In April 1919 he left England as a member of the nursing staff aboard the Marathon, reaching Melbourne on June 7th.
