Murray Willis Simpson was born in Birchip, Victoria, was single and a Grazier living in Ballarat when he enlisted with the 6th Field Ambulance, Section A on 11 March 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A31 Ajana on 4 June 1915. In December 1916 he was attached with the 6th Australian Field Ambulance as a Driver and in January 1917 he was attached with the 1st A Divisional Supply Column. According to his digitised records he completed his tour without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 27 April 1919.
