Biography

Harry Ellingsen (SN 3184) born in Ballarat, was a 20 year old cabinet maker when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 15th 1915. He left for active service aboard the Ajana on June 4th, assigned to the 6th Field Ambulance. After some further training in Egypt, he reached the battlefields of France in March 1916. In May he was withdrawn from the front line for three weeks suffering from ‘nervous shock’. He avoided further battle wounds but just three days after the Armistice he suffered an unspecified accidental head injury. As a member of the nursing staff he returned to Australia aboard the Orca, reaching Melbourne on April 7th 1919. He was discharged on June 6th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harry Ellingson.
