Biography

Peter James Hodgetts (SN 653) was born in Ballarat and attended the Wendouree State School. On October 26th 1914 he enlisted at Ballarat as a Sapper in the 4th Division Signals Company. He was 21 years old, single, and employed as a tram conductor. He embarked from Australia just prior to Christmas 1914, to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. His service at Gallipoli was interrupted by periods out of the line due to a sprained ankle and illness. He arrived in France in June 1916 but was killed on July 7th 1917 near Bailleul when an enemy aeroplane dropped a bomb near him. He is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery, France. He was 23 years of age.
