Biography

Alexander Henry White ( LT. Col.) was born in Ballarat where he was privately tutored before attending Grenville College. He enlisted in Melbourne on September 21st 1914 at which time he was working as a maltster in the family business, married to Myrtle and 32 years of age. He embarked from Melbourne on February 25th 1915 and, at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, landed at Gallipoli as Commanding Officer of the 8th Light Horse Regiment. On the August 7th 1915 he was killed in action when leading his regiment in the disastrous charge at The Nek. He has no known grave, and his name is on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey
