Biography

Frank Gabriel Herman, brother of Arnold Glover Herman Tree No. 3181) was born in Ballarat and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the Infantry Brigade Train 8 on 27 October 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. . He trained with the Australian Army Service Corps then embarked aboard the Ascanius on November 10th 1915. He arrived in France in June 1916. In March 1917 he transferred to the 14th Field Company Engineers and commenced a period of distinguished service that saw him Mentioned in Despatches æby Sir Douglas Haig in his despatch of 7/11/17 for Distinguished and Gallant Services and Devotion to duty in the field during the period Feb. 26th to midnight 20/21st Sept. 1917'. He served right through the war, avoiding major illness or injury, and returned to Australia on the Chemnitz, disembarking at Melbourne on September 5th 1919.
