Biography

John Charles Cherry MM (SN 80) born in Melbourne, was a 26 year old commercial traveller when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 18th 1914. He embarked aboard the Southern on October 18th and sailed to Egypt then on to Gallipoli in May to serve with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance. After the Gallipoli campaign he was transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion before reaching France in June 1916. His service on the Western Front was of the highest standard. He was twice Mentioned in Despatches by General Sir Douglas Haig and was awarded the Military Medal, 'For conspicuous devotion to duty as Transport Sergeant of the Battalion. His work has always been of a very high order. He has done exceptionally good work in getting rations forward under heavy artillery fire. During operations East of HAMEL on 8th August 1918 he had charge of mule train with ammunition and rations. It was owing to his exceptional courage and initiative in pushing forward with the advance that troops were supplied with a hot meal soon after arrival on final objective. On 23rd August 1918 near LIHONS he again displayed courage, initiative, and ability delivering rations to Battalion dump near front line, under heavy shell fire. His conduct at all times has been very noticeable and is a fine example to his men.' After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Port Sydney, disembarked at Melbourne on December 2nd 1918 and was discharged on January 31st 1919. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V395093.
