Biography

Harold Leslie Brand (SN 749) born at Bairnsdale, was a 19 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 17th 1914. He embarked aboard the Benalla on October 20th , first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli to serve with the 8th Infantry Battalion. Illness in August 1915 caused him to be evacuated to Mudros for three weeks. Back in Egypt after the Gallipoli evacuation, he was transferred to the 60th Battalion in February 1916 then moved to France. In July 1918 he was withdrawn to England where he was granted 1914 leave and embarked from England on July 21st on submarine guard duty. He was discharged on November 18th 1918.
