Biography

Penistan James Patterson (Lt.) was educated at Port Pirie S.A. and Duntroon Military College. . He enlisted on 18th August 1914 as soon as he completed his Officer Training Course. He was 20 years old and single. As a Lieutenant in the 12th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Hobart on October 20th on board the Geelong, bound for Gallipoli. He was killed in action during the Landing at Anzac Cove on 25th April 1915 and was Mentioned in Dispatches by Sir Ian Hamilton, commander in chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, for 'actions of conspicuous gallantry or valuable service'. He has no known grave and his name appears on the Australian Memorial at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, Turkey.
