Born in Ballarat, Clifford Guppy was a single 22 year old painter at the time of his enlistment on the 19th of August 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A3 Orvieto on the 21st of October 1914. On the 26th of April 1915, he was reported wounded with a bullet wound to his shoulder. On August 15th 1915, he embarked for Australia on the hospital ship Themistocles due to being wounded in action.
He returned to Australia on the 9th of September 1915, and was discharged as wounded on the 8th of November 1915.
At the age of 24, and still a painter by trade, Clifford enlisted again on the 2nd of October 1916. It is unknown when he embarked for active service abroad.
On October 9th 1916 he was listed as a Corporal.
He was discharged on the 11th of January 1918 at his own request to proceed to England to work as a munition worker.
