Biography

Graham Godfrey Berry (32/2nd Lt.) was born in Melbourne and was a 26 year old sleeper cutter when he enlisted in Sydney on August 18th 1914. As a member of the 3rd Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Euripides on October 20th. He served at Gallipoli then in France from March 1916. He was wounded in action, shell shock, on July 28th 1916 but able to rejoin his unit two weeks later. He had several hospitalisations for different conditions, but the highlight of his service came in August 1918 when he earned a Distinguished Conduct Medal ‘for conspicuous gallantry at Chuignes, 23 August, 1918. While commanding a platoon in an attack on the village, he led his men with great determination, and captured four field guns, which had been firing at point blank range.' When hostilities ceased, he was attached to the Graves Burial Detachment then commissioned as lieutenant in April 1919. He returned to Australia aboard the Ascanius, disembarked on November 10th 1919 and was discharged soon after.

His brothers Benjamin and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
