Biography

Anthony Simpson Gilpin (SN 461) was born in St Kilda but grew up in Ballarat where he attended the Macarthur Street State School. He was unmarried, an ironmonger and 21 at Broken Hill NSW, when he enlisted at Morphetville SA, on 22nd August 1914 (service record show his enlistment age as 24).
He joined the 10th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Australia in October. After further training in Egypt he took part in the historic landing at Gallipoli where he was killed in action, April 25th 1915 aged 22. He has no known grave and his name is on the Australian Memorial at Lone Pine, Gallipoli.
