Biography

David Lionel Williams (SN 1238) was born at Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1889. He had attended the Mt. Pleasant State School, Victoria and his mother Elizabeth, his next of kin, was resident in Humffray Street South, Ballarat. He was a 27 year old engine driver when he enlisted on October 30th 1914 at Liverpool in N.S.W . He sailed with the first AIF contingent and, after time in Egypt, as a member of the 13th Battalion he took part in the Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915.
Just three days later on April 28th he was killed in action and is buried at Beach Cemetery at the south end of Anzac Cove. His headstone carries the epitaph "THE DEARLY LOVED SON OF MR & MRS H WILLIAMS OF BALLARAT". Unfortunately, notification of his death was initially sent to Humffray Street, Bathurst instead of Ballarat and his family was not advised of his death until some weeks later.
He is remembered on the grave of his parents Henry and Elizabeth in Ballarat’s New Cemetery.
His brother Rupert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
