Biography

Walter Dawson (SN 401) was born in Lilydale but attended the Black Hill and Macarthur Street State Schools in Ballarat. With the consent of his parents, he enlisted on September 28th 1914 at which time he was an 18 year old blacksmith. He was posted to the 9th Light Horse Regiment as a Trooper, first to Egypt, and then to Gallipoli in May, where the Light Horse men served as infantry. He was killed in action on August 28th 1915, during the attack on Hill 60 on Gallipoli. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Australian National Memorial at Lone Pine. He was just 19 years of age.
