Albert Gesell (SN 620 & 700) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old rope maker when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 7th 1914. As a reinforcement for the 8th Light Horse Regiment, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Armadale on February 12th 1915 and joined his unit on Gallipoli at the beginning of August. Just a week later, on August 7th, he took part in the ill-fated charge at The Nek during which he suffered a gunshot wound to his left foot. He was evacuated to hospital in Egypt before being returned to Australia on the Kanowna, disembarking at Melbourne on November 22nd 1915. He was discharged as medically unfit on April 4th 1916.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Albert Gessell.
