Biography

Arthur William Nicholas (SN 145) born in Melbourne, was a 20 year old cordial manufacturer when he enlisted at Queenscliff on August 18th 1914. Allotted to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. He was wounded in action in May 1915 when he suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was evacuated first to Malta and then on to England. Once recovered, he was transferred to the 1st Machine Gun Company and moved to France in May 1916. He was wounded for a second time on October 4th 1917 when he suffered a gunshot wound to his right heel. He was again evacuated to hospital in England where it was determined that he was unfit for further active service. He was returned to Australia on the Corinthic and was discharged ‘medically unfit, heel wound’ on April 24th 1918.
