Biography

George Everett James (Capt.) was born in Ballarat, attended the Black Hill State School and was teaching at Mt Rowan when he enlisted on December 16th 1914. 24 years old and unmarried. he was posted to 8th Infantry Battalion at the rank of Lieutenant and departed Australia in February 1915 on board the Clan Macgillivray. In May 1915 he was wounded at Gallipoli and hospitalised at Lemnos, rejoining his unit a month later. While in Egypt, after the Gallipoli evacuation, he was promoted to Captain before moving on to France. He was seriously wounded near Pozieres, and died on July 24th 1916. He is buried in the Becourt Military Cemetery, France.
