Biography

Leslie John Shannon was born in Prahran, Victoria, was single and working as a Plumber in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 7th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 5 January 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 14 April 1915. He transferred to the 58th Battalion in march 1916 and was admitted to hospital as sick in May with Trench Foot. He re-joined his unit and marched into England on 526 July 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal, but on 26 October 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm. It was severe enough to require amputation. He received a medical discharge and returned home to Australia on 31 January 1918.
