Biography

Frederick Richard Davey (SN 1933) was born in Ballarat and attended the Macarthur Street State School. The 25 year old butcher enlisted in Stawell January 4th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne with the 5th Battalion on board the Hororata in April and was transferred to the 8th Battalion at Gallipoli in August. In October, he was hospitalised with synovitis of the knee which apparently didn't respond to treatment as he was evacuated to England in December. In May 1916 he briefly returned to Egypt before being posted to France with the 2nd Machine Gun Company. He was killed in action at Menin Road on September 21st 1917. He was 28 years of age, has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 3074.

His brothers Roland and Ernest also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
