Biography

William George Hicks (SN 272) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old boundary rider when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 5th 1915. Assigned to the 13th Light Horse Regiment, he embarked aboard the Persic on May 28th and joined his unit at Gallipoli until illness forced his evacuation in October. In August 1916 he joined the 2nd Anzac Light Horse Regiment in France, then in April 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd Anzac Headquarters. He avoided battle wounds but was constantly limited by health issues. He returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses, disembarked at Melbourne on March 10th 1919 and was discharged on May 2nd, ‘medically unfit, effort syndrome’.
