Robert Vernon Quick was born in Ballarat, was single and a Butcher when he enlisted in the 7th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 18 January 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 14 April 1915. After suffering from bouts fo influenza which requires hospitalisation, he was wounded in action whilst in France on 22 July 1916 with a slight gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was transferred from France to England aboard the HS Bumbria and later returned to Australia aboard the HT Themistocles with a collapsed right lung.
