Alfred Ferdinand Shaw (SN 430) born in St. Arnaud, was a 29 year old saddler when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 18th 1915. He embarked aboard the Persic on May 28th and in March 1916 he arrived in France to serve with the 13th Light Horse Regiment. Two months later he was transferred to the 6th Field Artillery Brigade as a saddler. He avoided battle wounds but was troubled by illness during his service. He returned to Australia aboard the Port Macquarie, disembarked at Melbourne on May 26th 1919 and was discharged on July 25th.
