William Barnsdale Campbell (Capt.) was a married 29 year old schoolteacher when he commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant on December 23rd 1914. He embarked aboard the Hororata April 17th 1915 and joined the 7th Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli in June. He was first troubled by malaria then in August he suffered a gunshot wound to his forearm which left him with a compound fracture. He was evacuated to Malta then England but was able to rejoin his unit in France in March 1916. In August he was slightly wounded but promoted to captain. In October 1917 he suffered a shrapnel wound to his leg and in December he was Mentioned in Despatches by Sir Douglas Haig for his courageous and conscientious service. At his request, for family reasons, he returned to Australia aboard the Port Darwin, disembarked at Melbourne on March 4th 1918 and his appointment was terminated on March 18th.
