Born in Lethbridge, Victoria, James John McMahon was a single 23 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, Victoria on the 30th of March 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 10th of May 1915.
On the 13th of November 1916, James was wounded in action. On the 22nd of November he was transferred to England with shell wounds to his right side.
James returned to Australia on the 18th of September 1917, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 6th of December 1917.
