Neil Macdonald (Lt.) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Pleasant Street State School. He enlisted on December 1st 1915 as a 22 year old clerk. He was accepted by the 23rd Infantry Battalion and, after attending an Officer Training School, he was appointed Lieutenant. He arrived in France in April 1916 but died of wounds received in action at Pozieres on July 29th 1916, and is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery, France.
His brother Robert was killed at Passchendaele and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
