George Alexander Buchanan enlisted in Ballarat as a Sapper, Regimental No. 4487, in the 8th Field Company Australian Engineers on 10th February 1915. He had been born in Ballarat, and was a 22 year old, unmarried blacksmith. He was killed in action in the Passchendaele area on 28th October 1917. He is buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium.
