Biography

George Alexander Buchanan (SN 4487) enlisted in Ballarat as a Sapper in the 8th Field Company Australian Engineers on February 10th 1915. Born in Ballarat and educated at Mt Pleasant State School, he was a 22 year old, unmarried blacksmith when he embarked from Melbourne on the Ulysses on May 10th. He was in and out of hospital for much of his service, with various ailments including jaundice, pneumonia, influenza and dysentery. He was killed in action in the Passchendaele area on October 28th 1917. He is buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium.
