James Patrick Conway (SN 2312), born in Ballarat, was a 33 year old miner when he enlisted in February 1915. Assigned initially to the 22nd Infantry Battalion he was then transferred to the 6th Battalion before embarking in June. He saw action at Gallipoli until frostbite forced his evacuation to Egypt. In March 1916 he was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion for service in France where he was mentioned in dispatches for ‘Conspicuous good work and devotion to duty February-August 1917. A most skilful miner and always to be relied upon for difficult and dangerous work.’ He avoided battle wounds but illnesses caused him to be hospitalised on several occasions. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Sardinia, disembarked on June 8th 1919 and was discharged soon after.
