Biography

William Edward Werner (SN 1785) was born in Donald, but enlisted in Ballarat on February 20th 1915. He was 21 years old, married to Agnes, and a labourer. He was posted to the 21st Infantry Battalion and embarked in mid-July on board the Demosthenes. He reached Gallipoli in late August having transferred to the 24th Infantry Battalion. On November 29th 1915 he was killed by an artillery barrage at Lone Pine. He has no known grave and his name is on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
