Biography

Horace William Edwards (SN 67) was born in Melbourne but was living in Ballarat with his parents when he enlisted there on 18th August 1914. The 19 year old draper joined the 8th Battalion and was quickly promoted to Corporal before embarking from Melbourne on board the Benalla in October. Promoted to Sergeant in the early days of the Gallipoli campaign, he suffered a gunshot wound to his ankle in May 1915 and was evacuated, first to Malta, then to England in August. There is some confusion in his record over whether he was wounded once or twice. Only the wound to his right ankle is recorded on his casualty form but his parents were advised that he was wounded a second time, and a summary page makes mention of a wound to his left ankle. In any event, he returned to Australia on board the Suevic in October 1915 and was placed on the supernumerary list in November. In May 1916, he was "Discharged to take up duty as Acting Staff Sergeant Major."
