Biography

Archibald John Collins was born Ballarat and a Bushman by trade when he enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment on 22 November 1916 at the age of 34. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Omrah on 17 January 1917. After a period in hospital he then moved over to France in October 1917 to serve as a gunner with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade. Less than a month later he was wounded in action, suffering a severe gunshot wound and gas burns, to his right arm. He was evacuated to England where his arm was amputated below the elbow. He sailed from England in April 1918 to return to Australia for discharge due to ædisability'.
