Born in Ballarat, Ernest William James Hooker was a single 21 year old farmer at the time of his enlistment on the 4th of March 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board A34 Persic on the 28th of May 1915.
He returned to Australia on the 7th of May 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 29th of August 1919, his debility not being stated.
