Biography

Rupert Marshall Harrop (SN 1109) was born in Horsham but was working as a farm hand at Bealiba when he enlisted on March 8th 1915. He was 22 years of age and single. He was appointed to 23rd Infantry Battalion and embarked on May 10th aboard the Euripides bound for Gallipoli. He spent time in Egypt after the Gallipoli evacuation before reaching France in March 1916. He was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, on October 3rd 1917, and is buried in Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, Belgium

His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue. Charles was killed at Pozieres in 1916.
