Biography

William Morgan Jones was born in Echuca, VIC and was a Draughtsman by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 5th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 8 March 1915 at the age of 37. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 25 June 1915. . It seems he was twice slightly wounded at Gallipoli but his service record carries no detail regarding wounds. In September 1915 he was evacuated from Anzac and hospitalised at Malta suffering from gastritis, before being transferred to the Venereal Hospital at Portland, England. He accrued a string of disciplinary breaches until November 1916 when he faced a General Court Martial charged with escaping from lawful custody and being absent without leave. He was found guilty and sentenced to 28 days detention and forfeiture of 42 day's pay. He served his detention at Wandsworth Detention Barracks before returning to Australia on the Anchises. He was discharged in February 1918 as æmedically unfit – bronchitis and age'.
