Biography

Lawrence Paul Rubens Kildahl (SN 1307) born at Maitland, NSW, was a 36 year old caretaker when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 27th 1914. On February 2nd 1915 he left Melbourne on the Clan Macgillivray as reinforcement for the 5th Infantry Battalion. He served for a time on Gallipoli until illness forced his evacuation to Imbros and then on to England. In December 1916 he joined the 46th Battalion in France and on April 11th 1917 he was wounded in action suffering a wound to his left elbow. This wound, and his worsening rheumatism, forced his evacuation to England and his return to Australia. He returned home on the Port Lyttleton, reached Melbourne on December 15th 1917 and was discharged on January 21st 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Lawrence P. Kindahl.
