Biography

Stanley George Thompson (SN 3224) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 16th 1915. Assigned to the 6th Field Ambulance as a driver, he embarked aboard the Ajana on June 4th and sailed to Egypt. While most of his unit was then deployed to Gallipoli, he was retained in Egypt where his work as a driver could be better utilised. In March 1916 he was deployed to the battlefields of France. In July 1916 he was disciplined on account of his involvement in a disturbance in a French village bar. In June 1918 he was wounded in action when he was gassed and he was evacuated to hospital behind the lines in France. He was able to rejoin his unit in September but soon after this he was evacuated to hospital in Scotland suffering from a septic throat. When the fighting ceased he returned to Australia on nursing duty aboard the Saxon, disembarked at Melbourne on January 30th 1919 and was discharged two months later on April 1st.

His brother Edmund also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
