Private Henry Smith, a Melbourne-born Horse Driver, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 12 September 1914. On 14 May 1915 he suffered a serious gunshot wound to the eye which resulted in hospitalization. He later suffered another gunshot wound to the 'left eyebrow'. On 24 June 1916 Pvt Smith revived a medial discharge for the gunshot wounds to the head and heart disease.
